Animal Farm by George Orwell tells the story of a group of farm animals who revolt against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Led by the pigs, the animals of the farm successfully drive the farmer away and take over the land. They draw up a set of commandments, creating an Animalist ideology that all animals should adhere to. Initially, the animals work together and the farm prospers. However, over time, the pigs become more and more powerful and begin to manipulate the rules of Animalism to suit their own needs. The other animals soon realize that they have been betrayed, but by then it is too late. The novel is an allegory for the Russian Revolution, in which the ideals of communism were ultimately corrupted by those in power.
