Loss of humanity from "summary" of Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell

In the societies depicted in both Animal Farm and 1984, the concept of humanity is gradually eroded as the characters are subjected to oppressive systems that strip them of their individuality and freedom. The pigs in Animal Farm, once comrades in the fight for equality, soon adopt the same oppressive tactics as their human oppressors, betraying the very principles they once fought for. This betrayal of their fellow animals illustrates how power can corrupt even the noblest of intentions, leading to a loss of empathy and compassion. Similarly, in 1984, the Party manipulates its citizens through constant surveillance and propaganda, creating a society devoid of love, trust, and basic human emotions. Winston, the protagonist, becomes a symbol of resistance against the Party's dehumanizing tactics, but even he ultimately succumbs to the all-encompassing power of Big Brother. The Party's ability to control not only the actions but also the thoughts of its citizens demonstrates the extent to which humanity can be stripped away under a totalitarian regime. Throughout both novels, Orwell highlights the dangers of totalitarianism and the ways in which oppressive systems can dehumanize individuals, turning them into mere cogs in a larger machine. The characters in these novels are reduced to their most basic instincts for self-preservation, sacrificing their values and relationships in the process. The loss of humanity in these societies is not a sudden event, but a gradual erosion of individuality and agency in the face of oppressive power.
  1. Orwell challenges readers to question the systems of power in their own societies and to resist the forces that seek to dehumanize them. Ultimately, the concept of loss of humanity in Animal Farm and 1984 serves as a reminder of the fragility of human nature and the constant struggle to preserve one's sense of self in the face of oppressive forces.
