Control of emotion from "summary" of Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell
The ability to regulate one's emotions is a crucial aspect of maintaining control over individuals in a totalitarian regime. In both Animal Farm and 1984, the ruling party manipulates the emotions of the masses to maintain power and suppress dissent. In Animal Farm, the pigs use propaganda and manipulation to control the emotions of the other animals. They instill fear, anger, and loyalty in the animals to ensure their compliance and obedience. By controlling the emotions of the animals, the pigs are able to maintain their authority and prevent any uprising or rebellion. Similarly, in 1984, the Party uses fear, hate, and love to manipulate the emotions of the citizens. The Party's slogans such as "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength" are designed to confuse and control the emotions of the people. By instilling fear of the Thought Police and love for Big Brother, the Party ensures that the citizens remain loyal and obedient. The concept of controlling emotions extends beyond just instilling fear or loyalty. In both novels, the ruling parties also suppress emotions such as love, joy, and hope. Emotions that could lead to independent thinking or rebellion are suppressed and replaced with emotions that serve the interests of the ruling elite.- The control of emotions is a powerful tool used by totalitarian regimes to maintain power and suppress dissent. By manipulating the emotions of the masses, the ruling party can ensure total control over individuals and prevent any challenge to their authority. In both Animal Farm and 1984, the concept of controlling emotions plays a central role in the oppressive regimes depicted by George Orwell.
