Helping others helps oneself from "summary" of Alcoholics Anonymous, Fourth Edition by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.
Helping others is a fundamental aspect of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous. By reaching out to those who are still suffering from alcoholism, we are able to share our experiences, strength, and hope with them. In doing so, we not only provide support and guidance to others but also reinforce our own sobriety. When we take the time to help someone else on their journey to recovery, we are reminded of the struggles we once faced ourselves. This serves as a powerful motivator to stay committed to our own sobriety and continue working on ourselves. By being of service to others, we are able to stay connected to the program and maintain our spiritual condition. Furthermore, helping others allows us to step outside of ourselves and focus on someone else's needs. This can be incredibly therapeutic and provide a sense of fulfillment that is hard to find elsewhere. By shifting our focus away from our own problems and onto the needs of others, we are able to gain perspective and find gratitude for the progress we have made in our own recovery. In AA, we learn that self-centeredness is a root cause of our alcoholism. By helping others, we are actively combating this self-centeredness and working towards personal growth and spiritual development. By putting the needs of others before our own, we are able to break free from the cycle of selfishness and self-destructive behavior that once consumed us.- The act of helping others is not only beneficial to those we are assisting but also to ourselves. It is through acts of service and selflessness that we are able to experience true healing and transformation in our recovery journey. By giving back to the program and to others, we are able to strengthen our own sobriety and find fulfillment in living a life of purpose and meaning.
