Society's laws and customs reinforce existing inequalities from "summary" of A Discourse Upon the Origin and Foundation of the Inequality Among Mankind. by John James Rousseau, by JEAN-JACQUES. ROUSSEAU

The laws and customs of society often serve to maintain and perpetuate existing inequalities among its members. These inequalities can manifest in various forms, such as wealth disparities, social status differences, or power imbalances. Society's laws, which are created and enforced by those in positions of authority, tend to favor the interests of the dominant groups, thereby reinforcing the existing inequalities. Customs, on the other hand, are unwritten rules and norms that govern social behavior and interactions. These customs are often deeply ingrained in society and can be difficult to challenge or change. They reflect the values and beliefs of the dominant groups and can serve to uphold their privileged positions in society. Furthermore, the combination of laws and customs can create a system of oppression that marginalizes certain groups while privileging others. For example, laws that discriminate against minority groups or customs that uphold traditional gender roles can contribute to the perpetuation of inequality. In this way, society's laws and customs work hand in hand to maintain the status quo and reinforce existing inequalities. Those who benefit from the current social order are unlikely to challenge or change these laws and customs, as doing so would mean giving up some of their privilege and power. As a result, those who are marginalized or oppressed by these laws and customs are left with little recourse for achieving equality.
