From the earliest age that I can remember, I was abused by the one person who should have loved me unconditionally - my own mother. I often wondered what I had done to deserve such treatment. I would wake up in the morning, fearful of what the day would bring. The physical abuse was bad enough, but the emotional torment was even worse. My mother would single me out for punishment, while my brothers were treated with kindness and love. She would force me to eat out of the garbage, or she would deny me food altogether. I was forced to wear the same torn and tattered clothes every day, while my brothers had new clothes and shoes. I was not allowed to bathe, so I was constantly dirty and unkempt. The worst part of the abuse was the psychological damage it caused. My mother would tell me I was worthless, that I was a mistake.
