Empathy is crucial in understanding others' struggles from "summary" of 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher

In his novel "13 Reasons Why," Jay Asher portrays the importance of empathy in comprehending the challenges faced by others. Throughout the story, the characters struggle with their own issues, and it is through empathy that they are able to connect with and understand each other on a deeper level. One example of this is when Clay Jensen, the main protagonist, listens to the tapes left behind by Hannah Baker, a girl who took her own life. As Clay listens to Hannah's recordings, he begins to understand the pain and suffering she experienced, which he was unaware of before. This newfound understanding allows Clay to empathize with Hannah and see her in a different light. Moreover, by empathizing with Hannah, Clay is able to recognize the impact of his actions, however unintentional, on her life. This realization leads Clay to reflect on his behavior and how it may have contributed to Hannah's downward spiral. Through empathy, Clay is able to see beyond his own perspective and acknowledge the struggles Hannah faced. Similarly, other characters in the novel also demonstrate the power of empathy in understanding others' struggles. For instance, Jessica Davis, who is dealing with her own trauma, is able to empathize with Hannah and the pain she went through. This empathy allows Jessica to see Hannah in a different light and understand the reasons behind her actions.
