Brain strives for rewards from "summary" of Your Brain at Work by David Rock
The brain is wired to seek out rewards. This primal instinct is deeply ingrained in our neural circuitry and drives much of our behavior. When we are motivated by the promise of a reward, our brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that signals pleasure and reinforces the behavior that led to the reward. This dopamine release creates a positive feedback loop in the brain, motivating us to seek out more rewards in the future. Our brain's reward system is rooted in our evolutionary history. In the wild, animals that were motivated to seek out rewards like food, shelter, and mates had a better chance of survival and reproduction. Over time, this reward-seeking behavior became hardwired into our brains as a way to ensure our survival as a species. In modern society, our brains still crave rewards, but the nature of those rewards has changed. Instead of hunting for food or finding a mate, we now seek out rewards like money, status, and social approval. These modern rewards still trigger the same dopamine release in our brains, reinforcing our behavior and driving us to seek out more rewards. While our brain's reward system can be a powerful motivator, it can also lead to addictive behavior. When we become dependent on a certain reward, whether it's a substance, a behavior, or an experience, our brain's reward system can become hijacked, leading to harmful consequences.- Breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, and rewarding ourselves for progress, we can leverage our brain's reward system to drive us towards our desired outcomes. Ultimately, by understanding and working with our brain's natural tendencies, we can unlock our full potential and achieve greater success in our personal and professional lives.
