Yoga postures are designed to balance the doshas from "summary" of Yoga and Ayurveda by David Frawley

Yoga postures have been designed to create a state of balance and harmony within the body, mind, and spirit. According to the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, this balance is necessary to maintain good health and prevent disease. In Ayurveda, the doshas are the three primary energies that govern our physical and mental functioning. These doshas are known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each individual has a unique combination of these doshas, which determines their constitution or prakriti. When the doshas are out of balance, it can lead to various health issues and imbalances in the body. For example, an excess of Vata dosha can result in anxiety, dry skin, and insomnia, while an excess of Pitta dosha can lead to anger, inflammation, and digestive problems. Similarly, an excess of Kapha dosha can cause lethargy, weight gain, and respiratory issues. Yoga postures, also known as asanas, have been specifically designed to help balance the doshas and restore harmony to the body. Each yoga posture has a unique effect on the doshas, helping to pacify any excess and stimulate any deficiency. For example, grounding and calming postures can help balance an excess of Vata dosha, while cooling and soothing postures can help balance an excess of Pitta dosha.
  1. Individuals can help bring the doshas back into balance and promote overall health and well-being. This integration of yoga and Ayurveda allows for a holistic approach to health that addresses not only the physical body but also the mind and spirit.
