Imbalance in the doshas leads to disease from "summary" of Yoga and Ayurveda by David Frawley
The imbalance in the doshas, the three fundamental energies in Ayurveda, is the primary cause of disease according to this ancient healing system. When the doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha - are in a state of equilibrium, they maintain health and vitality in the body. However, any disruption in their balance can lead to various health issues. Each dosha governs specific functions in the body and mind. Vata is responsible for movement and communication, Pitta for metabolism and transformation, and Kapha for structure and stability. When any of these doshas become excessive or deficient, they create disharmony in the body, leading to the manifestation of disease. For example, an excess of Vata can cause dryness, constipation, anxiety, and insomnia. On the other hand, an excess of Pitta can result in inflammation, acidity, anger, and skin rashes. Similarly, an excess of Kapha can lead to weight gain, lethargy, congestion, and attachment. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of maintaining the balance of the doshas through diet, lifestyle, herbal remedies, yoga, meditation, and other healing practices. By understanding one's unique constitution (Prakriti) and current state of imbalance (Vikriti), one can take steps to restore harmony and prevent the onset of disease. The goal of Ayurveda is not just to treat symptoms but to address the root cause of illness by rebalancing the doshas. Through personalized recommendations and holistic therapies, Ayurveda aims to bring the body and mind back into a state of equilibrium, promoting health, longevity, and overall well-being.- The concept of imbalance in the doshas leading to disease is central to Ayurveda. By recognizing and addressing these imbalances, one can prevent and alleviate various health issues, allowing for a harmonious and vibrant life.
