Selfdiscipline is overrated from "summary" of Willpower Doesn't Work by Benjamin Hardy

It’s not uncommon for people to view self-discipline as the key to success. After all, we’ve been told time and time again that if we just buckle down and exert enough willpower, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. But what if I told you that this belief is not only misguided but actually detrimental to your goals? In reality, relying solely on self-discipline is a recipe for failure. The problem with self-discipline is that it’s a depletable resource. Just like a muscle that tires out after too much use, our willpower can only take us so far before it gives out. This is why so many people struggle to stick to diets, exercise regimens, or other self-improvement goals in the long term. They rely on sheer force of will to get them through, only to find themselves burnt out and backsliding before they know it. Instead of focusing on self-discipline, we should be looking for ways to set up our environments and routines so that they support our goals effortlessly. By creating systems that make the desired behavior the path of least resistance, we can bypass the need for constant willpower and instead rely on habits and automation to carry us forward. This is not to say that self-discipline has no place in personal development. It can be a useful tool in certain situations, particularly when it comes to breaking bad habits or pushing through temporary roadblocks. But as a long-term strategy for success, it falls short. To truly make lasting change in our lives, we need to look beyond self-discipline and focus on creating environments that nurture and support our goals without requiring constant effort on our part. By shifting our mindset away from the myth of self-discipline and towards a more holistic approach to personal growth, we can set ourselves up for sustainable success. It’s time to stop glorifying willpower and start designing our lives in a way that makes success inevitable.
