Confirmation bias is a powerful force that can shape our perceptions and decisions without us even realizing it. This cognitive bias occurs when we seek out information that confirms our preexisting beliefs and ignore or discount evidence that contradicts them. In essence, we cherry-pick the facts that support our views while dismissing those that challenge them. This tendency to selectively process information can lead us down a slippery slope of closed-mindedness. When we only pay attention to sources that align with our opinions, we create an echo chamber of reinforcement. This echo chamber shields us from considering alternative viewpoints and perspectives that may challenge our assumptions.
