Peoplepleasing and perfectionism can harm our health from "summary" of When the Body Says No by Gabor Maté, MD
People who constantly seek the approval of others and strive for perfection are unknowingly putting their health at risk. The need to please everyone around us and the relentless pursuit of flawlessness can have detrimental effects on our physical and emotional well-being. When we prioritize the desires and expectations of others over our own needs, we are essentially betraying ourselves. This internal conflict between our authentic selves and the persona we present to the world can manifest in various health issues. Suppressed emotions and unexpressed feelings can lead to chronic stress, which in turn weakens our immune system and makes us more susceptible to illness.
Perfectionism, on the other hand, sets unrealistic standards that are impossible to meet. The relentless drive to achieve perfection can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and self-criticism. These negative emotions create a toxic internal environment that can contribute to the development of chronic conditions such as autoimmune diseases, cancer, and heart problems.
Furthermore, people who are constantly striving for perfection are often more prone to burnout and exhaustion. The relentless pressure to excel in every aspect of their lives leaves them with little time for rest and relaxation. This chronic state of overwork and stress can wreak havoc on our bodies, leading to a variety of health issues ranging from insomnia to digestive problems.
In order to protect our health, we must learn to set boundaries, prioritize self-care, and cultivate self-compassion. By acknowledging our own needs and limitations, we can break free from the cycle of people-pleasing and perfectionism. It is only when we start honoring our true selves that we can truly thrive and lead a fulfilling, healthy life.
