Finding beauty in suffering is possible from "summary" of When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

The idea that beauty can be found in suffering may seem paradoxical. How can something as painful and tragic as suffering be beautiful? Yet, as I navigated through my own journey of illness and mortality, I began to see glimpses of this unexpected beauty. It wasn't in the suffering itself, but in the way that suffering can illuminate the things that truly matter in life. When faced with the possibility of death, the trivialities and distractions that once consumed me faded into the background. What remained were the deep connections with loved ones, the moments of pure joy and gratitude, and the profound sense of purpose that came from confronting mortality head-on. In those moments, I found a kind of beauty that transcended the pain and fear of suffering. Suffering also has the power to strip away the layers of pretense and ego that we often hide behind. It forces us to confront our own vulnerabilities and limitations, to acknowledge our own mortality. In this raw and unfiltered state, there is a kind of purity and authenticity that can be strangely beautiful. Furthermore, suffering can be a catalyst for growth and transformation. It pushes us beyond our comfort zones, forcing us to confront our deepest fears and insecurities. In this process of struggle and adaptation, we can discover strengths and resilience that we never knew we had. It is in these moments of struggle and growth that we can find a different kind of beauty - the beauty of resilience, of perseverance, of human spirit.
  1. Finding beauty in suffering is not about denying the pain or minimizing the impact of tragedy. It is about recognizing that even in the darkest moments, there can be moments of light and hope. It is about finding meaning and purpose in the face of adversity, and embracing the full spectrum of human experience - both the joy and the sorrow, the beauty and the suffering.
