The pressure to fit in can cause us to suppress our true identities from "summary" of Weird by Olga Khazan
When we are different from the norm, whether it be in the way we look, the way we think, or the way we behave, we often feel pressure to conform. The desire to fit in can be incredibly strong, pushing us to suppress aspects of ourselves that do not align with the expectations of society. This pressure to conform can be especially intense during adolescence, a time when fitting in seems like the most important thing in the world. We may hide our true identities out of fear of rejection or ridicule. We may change the way we dress, the way we speak, or even the way we think in order to blend in with the crowd. In doing so, we sacrifice a part of ourselves, dimming our own unique light in order to avoid standing out. This suppression of our true identities can have a profound impact on our mental health and well-being, leading to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and even depression. The pressure to fit in can also prevent us from fully exploring and expressing who we truly are. We may never discover our passions, our talents, or our true purpose if we are constantly trying to mold ourselves into someone we are not. By conforming to societal expectations, we limit our own potential and deny ourselves the opportunity to live authentically.- The cost of suppressing our true identities is high. We may experience a sense of emptiness or dissatisfaction, as we are not living in alignment with our true selves. It is only when we have the courage to break free from the constraints of conformity that we can fully embrace who we are and live a life that is truly fulfilling.
