It affects aquatic life and human health from "summary" of Water Pollution by Arvind Kumar

The contamination of water bodies with pollutants poses a significant threat to both aquatic life and human health. Pollutants such as industrial chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, and fertilizers can have detrimental effects on the ecosystem of rivers, lakes, and oceans. Aquatic organisms may suffer from reduced reproductive success, impaired growth and development, and increased susceptibility to diseases due to exposure to these pollutants. The disruption of food chains and habitats can lead to declines in fish populations and biodiversity. Moreover, when humans consume contaminated water or eat seafood that has been exposed to pollutants, they may experience adverse health effects. These pollutants can accumulate in the tissues of aquatic organisms and biomagnify as they move up the food chain. As a result, people who rely on fish and other aquatic animals as a food source may be at risk of ingesting harmful substances such as mercury, lead, or PCBs. Chronic exposure to these contaminants can lead to a range of health problems, including neurological disorders, cancer, and reproductive issues. In addition to direct exposure through drinking water and food consumption, water pollution can also have indirect effects on human health. Contaminated water can contaminate soil, leading to the uptake of pollutants by crops and plants. When humans consume these contaminated foods, they may be exposed to harmful substances that can cause a variety of health problems. Furthermore, polluted water bodies can serve as breeding grounds for disease-carrying organisms such as mosquitoes, leading to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
  1. The impact of water pollution on aquatic life and human health is significant and multifaceted. Efforts to mitigate this issue require a comprehensive approach that addresses the sources of pollution, improves water quality monitoring and management, and promotes sustainable practices to protect water resources for both present and future generations.
