Vali, the mighty monkey king, had once banished his brother Sugriva from the kingdom out of fear of losing his own power. Sugriva sought refuge in the forest where he met the exiled prince Rama. Together, they formed a strong bond of friendship and agreed to help each other in their respective quests. Sugriva promised to aid Rama in finding his beloved wife Sita, who had been abducted by the demon king Ravana. In return, Rama vowed to help Sugriva reclaim his throne from Vali.
