Prejudice and discrimination from "summary" of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Prejudice and discrimination are pervasive themes in the novel. The citizens of Maycomb are quick to judge others based on their race, social status, or appearance. The African American community, in particular, faces widespread discrimination from the white residents. They are treated as inferior and are not given the same opportunities or respect as their white counterparts. One of the most glaring examples of prejudice in the novel is the trial of Tom Robinson. Despite overwhelming evidence of his innocence, Tom is found guilty simply because of his race.
