To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It is a coming-of-age story of Scout and Jem Finch, who are being raised by their father Atticus in the small Alabama town of Maycomb during the Great Depression. The story examines the issues of race and class in the Deep South, as well as courage, compassion, and heroism. Atticus is a lawyer who defends an African American man unjustly accused of rape by a white woman. In the process of defending the man, Atticus teaches his children valuable lessons about morality, justice, and the power of kindness. Through the adventures of Scout and Jem, the novel shows how courage can triumph over prejudice and how justice can ultimately prevail.
