In Maycomb, fear was a powerful force that seemed to grip the entire town. People were afraid of the unknown, the different, the things they did not understand. This fear manifested itself in various ways, from the adults who were afraid of change to the children who were afraid of the mysterious Boo Radley. Atticus Finch, however, seemed to be immune to this fear. He faced the prejudice and hatred of others with a calm demeanor and unwavering sense of justice. Atticus taught his children, Scout and Jem, to stand up for what is right, even in the face of fear. He believed that courage was not the absence of fear, but the ability to overcome it. One of the biggest challenges the children faced was the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. The town was consumed by racial prejudice and hatred, and the Finch family found themselves at odds with their neighbors.
