Confirmation bias reinforces existing beliefs from "summary" of Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman

Confirmation bias is a powerful force that shapes our thinking in subtle ways. It is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one's preexisting beliefs or hypotheses. When we encounter evidence that supports what we already believe, we tend to accept it uncritically, while dismissing or ignoring information that challenges our beliefs. This bias can have a profound impact on our decision-making, as it leads us to overlook important information and make faulty judgments. When we are presented with evidence that supports our beliefs, we feel a sense of validation and confidence in our views. This can reinforce our existing beliefs, making them even more resistant to change. Confirmation bias can also lead us to seek out sources of information that align with our beliefs, while avoiding or discrediting sources that present opposing views. This creates an echo chamber effect, where we are surrounded by like-minded individuals who reinforce and validate our beliefs, further entrenching them in our minds. In this way, confirmation bias can create a self-perpetuating cycle that makes it difficult for us to see beyond our existing beliefs. It can blind us to new information and perspectives, limiting our ability to think critically and objectively. By being aware of this bias and actively seeking out diverse perspectives and contrary evidence, we can overcome its influence and make more informed decisions.
