Embrace the transience of life from "summary" of The Zen of Living and Dying by Philip Kapleau

Life is fleeting, like a passing cloud in the sky or a wave on the ocean. We must come to terms with this impermanence, for it is the very nature of existence. By accepting this truth, we can find peace and freedom from suffering. When we resist the transience of life, we cause ourselves unnecessary pain and turmoil. We cling to fleeting moments, trying to hold on to something that is inherently fleeting. This clinging only leads to more suffering, as we inevitably face loss and change. Instead of fighting against the impermanence of life, we must learn to embrace it. We must learn to let go of attachments and expectations, and simply be present in each moment as it arises. In doing so, we can find a sense of calm and acceptance that transcends our fear of the unknown. By embracing the transience of life, we can learn to appreciate each moment for what it is, without grasping for more or wishing for things to be different. We can find joy in the simple pleasures of everyday life, and cultivate a sense of gratitude for the time we have been given.
  1. By acknowledging the impermanence of life, we can live more fully and authentically. We can let go of our fears and insecurities, and approach each day with a sense of openness and curiosity. In this way, we can find true peace and fulfillment, even in the face of life's inevitable changes and uncertainties.
