Hope dwindles from "summary" of The War of The Worlds by Hg Wells

Hope dwindles. It was a slow and agonizing process, like a candle burning out in a dark room. At first, there was a flicker of optimism in the air, a sense that perhaps things would get better. But as the days turned into weeks and the weeks turned into months, that flicker faded away, replaced by a pervasive sense of despair. The Martians had landed, and they were unlike anything the world had ever seen. Their technology was far superior to anything humanity possessed, and their ruthlessness knew no bounds. They were unstoppable, laying waste to everything in their path with no regard for human life. As the days went by, it became clear that there was no hope of defeating the Martians. They were too powerful, too advanced, too alien. The military was powerless against them, and the common people were left to fend for themselves as chaos reigned. People clung to whatever semblance of hope they could find, but it was a fragile and fleeting thing. The Martians seemed to be everywhere, their tripods roaming the countryside, their heat-rays reducing cities to ashes. There was nowhere to hide, no safe haven to retreat to. And so, as the days turned into weeks and the weeks turned into months, hope dwindled. It was a slow and painful process, a gradual realization that there was no escape, no victory to be had. The world had been forever changed by the arrival of the Martians, and there was nothing left to do but endure.
