And strange as it may seem, that night, the most extraordinary thing that has ever happened to me happened. War, you know, had come to us. And some of us were fighting, and some of us were falling. And my brother was lying dead on the common, struck by some unfamiliar weapon that had thundered through the air. I hardly knew what happened after that. I came out of my house, and found that not only had they all gone, but they had taken my horse and trap, and that they had broken into my house.
Then I heard the soft swish of the cylinder, and, looking up, I saw a long tube of metal flying through the air. I had heard of them, but had never seen one before. It was a fighting-machine. And then, for the first time, I realized that I was alone. The fighting-machines were roaring and hissing to a new set of engines, and the war had begun. The war of the worlds. The war that would decide the fate of humanity.
