Time traveler despairs over inevitable fate of human race from "summary" of The Time Machine by H. G. Wells

In the distant future, the Time Traveler journeys through time and witnesses the evolution of humanity. As he travels further into the future, he observes a world where the human race has divided into two distinct species - the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi, who live above ground, are fragile and childlike, while the Morlocks, who dwell underground, are brutish and mechanical. Initially intrigued by this new world, the Time Traveler soon comes to realize the grim reality of the situation. The Eloi, despite their idyllic existence, are actually preyed upon by the Morlocks, who emerge at night to feed on them. This revelation fills the Time Traveler with a sense of despair, as he recognizes the inevitable fate of the human race. The Time Traveler is distressed by the lack of ambition and intelligence displayed by both the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi have become weak and feeble, relying on the Morlocks to provide for their every need. Meanwhile, the Morlocks have devolved into a race of subterranean scavengers, devoid of any higher purpose or aspiration. As he delves deeper into the future, the Time Traveler is confronted with the stark realization that humanity is on a path of self-destruction. The division of society into two distinct classes has led to the stagnation and decline of the human race. The Time Traveler is haunted by the knowledge that this fate is all but inevitable, with no hope of redemption or salvation.
  1. The Time Traveler is forced to confront his own mortality and the impermanence of human civilization. His despair over the fate of the human race is profound, as he grapples with the sobering realization that all of humanity's achievements and ambitions will ultimately be rendered meaningless in the face of the inexorable march of time.
