Learning to speak from "summary" of The Story of My Life by Helen Keller

The process of learning to speak was a challenging and painstaking journey for me. I had always been fascinated by the sounds I heard others making, and I longed to be able to communicate in the same way. However, due to my profound deafness and blindness, this seemed like an impossible feat. My teacher, Anne Sullivan, was determined to help me overcome this obstacle. She tirelessly worked with me, using the manual alphabet to spell out words on my hand. I would then mimic the sounds she made with her lips, trying to replicate the words I felt on my hand. It was a slow and arduous process, but I was determined to succeed. At first, my attempts at speech were clumsy and unintelligible. I struggled to form the sounds correctly, and my voice was often strained and hoarse. However, Anne never gave up on me. She patiently guided me through each step, correcting my mistakes and encouraging me to keep trying. As time went on, I began to improve. My pronunciation became clearer, and I was able to string together simple sentences. I was overjoyed when I realized that I could now communicate verbally with those around me. It was a liberating feeling, knowing that I could express my thoughts and feelings through spoken words. Although my speech will never be perfect due to my disabilities, I am grateful for the progress I have made. Learning to speak has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me, allowing me to connect with others in a way I never thought possible. I will always be grateful to Anne for her unwavering dedication and belief in my abilities.
