Social movements fought for equality and justice from "summary" of The Story of Mankind, Original Edition (Yesterday's Classics) by Hendrik Willem Van Loon

In the course of the past two centuries, there had been a great many social movements. These movements had one common aim: the achievement of equality and justice for all members of the human race. Some of these movements had been successful while others had failed. Some had been just and noble, while others had been misguided and cruel. But all of them had contributed in one way or another to the slow but steady progress of mankind towards a more just and equitable society. The struggle for equality and justice had taken many different forms. Some movements had sought to achieve political equality, by fighting for the right of all individuals to participate in the government of their country. Others had focused on economic equality, by working to ensure that all members of society had access to the same opportunities and resources. Still others had concentrated on social equality, by challenging the prejudices and stereotypes that had long divided human beings into different classes and categories. One of the most important social movements in recent history had been the fight for the abolition of slavery. For centuries, human beings had been bought and sold like commodities, subjected to unspeakable cruelty and oppression. But a brave and determined group of individuals had risen up to challenge this injustice, working tirelessly to bring about the emancipation of the slaves and the recognition of their fundamental human rights. Another important social movement had been the struggle for women's rights. For much of history, women had been denied the same rights and opportunities as men, confined to the roles of wives and mothers, with little say in the affairs of the world. But a courageous group of women and men had come together to demand equal rights for women, fighting for the right to vote, to work, and to participate fully in the life of society. In the end, the success of these social movements had varied. Some had achieved their goals, while others had fallen short. But all of them had played a crucial role in shaping the world we live in today, pushing humanity ever closer towards the ideals of equality and justice that had long eluded us. And as long as there were men and women willing to stand up and fight for what is right, the struggle would continue, and progress would be made, however slow and difficult the journey might be.
