The Stoics believed in focusing on what is within our control from "summary" of The Stoic Art of Living by Tom Morris,Thomas V. Morris

The Stoics had a very clear and simple idea about where to focus our attention and our efforts in life. They believed that we should direct our attention to what is within our control, rather than worrying about things that are beyond our power to influence. This may seem like common sense at first, but it's actually a very radical idea when you think about it. The Stoics believed that there are some things in life that are simply beyond our control. No matter how hard we try, we can't change the past, we can't control other people's thoughts or actions, and we can't predict the future with certainty. These things are outside of our sphere of influence, and trying to control them will only lead to frustration, anxiety, and disappointment. Instead of wasting our time and energy on things that we can't change, the Stoics believed that we should focus on the things that are within our control. This includes our thoughts, our beliefs, our values, and our actions. These are the things that we have the power to shape and direct, and by focusing on them, we can cultivate a sense of inner peace, strength, and resilience. By concentrating on what is within our control, the Stoics believed that we could live a more fulfilling and meaningful life. We may not be able to control the external circumstances that we find ourselves in, but we can control how we respond to them. This is the key to living a life of wisdom, virtue, and serenity, according to the Stoics. So instead of fretting about the things that are beyond our power, let's focus on what we can control and make the most of it.
