We are motivated by a need for belonging from "summary" of The Social Animal by Elliot Aronson

The need for belonging is a fundamental motivation that drives much of human behavior. From an early age, we seek out connections with others, forming bonds with family, friends, and social groups. This need for belonging is rooted in our evolutionary history as social animals. Throughout our evolution, our survival depended on our ability to cooperate and work together with others in groups. Those who were able to form strong social bonds were more likely to survive and pass on their genes to future generations. This need for belonging continues to shape our behavior in the modern world. We are drawn to social groups that share our values, beliefs, and interests, seeking validation and support from others who are like us. Belonging to a group provides us with a sense of identity and purpose, helping us to define who we are and where we fit in the world. Without these connections, we can feel lost and isolated, struggling to find meaning in our lives. Our need for belonging can influence our decisions and actions in many ways. We may conform to the norms of our social group, even if it means sacrificing our own beliefs or values. We may seek out relationships that fulfill our need for connection, sometimes at the expense of our own well-being. We may go to great lengths to gain acceptance and approval from others, even if it means compromising our own integrity.
  1. We can cultivate meaningful relationships that support and nourish us. We can also become more aware of the ways in which our need for belonging may influence our behavior, allowing us to make more conscious choices about the groups we belong to and the relationships we invest in. Ultimately, embracing our need for belonging can help us lead more fulfilling and authentic lives.
