Nonverbal cues can influence perceptions of leadership authenticity from "summary" of The Silent Language of Leaders by Carol Kinsey Goman,Ph.D.

When it comes to leadership, authenticity is a crucial quality that can make or break a leader's effectiveness. People are naturally drawn to leaders who they perceive as genuine and trustworthy. This perception is often influenced by nonverbal cues that leaders display in their everyday interactions. These nonverbal cues can include everything from facial expressions and body language to the tone of voice and overall demeanor. For example, a leader who maintains strong eye contact, stands tall with open body language, and speaks with a confident tone is more likely to be perceived as authentic than a leader who avoids eye contact, slouches, and speaks in a monotone voice. These nonverbal cues send subtle signals to others about the leader's level of confidence, honesty, and sincerity. When nonverbal cues are aligned with verbal communication, they can enhance perceptions of a leader's authenticity. However, when there is a disconnect between what a leader says and how they say it nonverbally, people are more likely to question the leader's authenticity. For instance, if a leader claims to value teamwork and collaboration but displays closed-off body language and a dismissive tone when interacting with team members, their authenticity may be called into question.
  1. Facial expressions, and tone of voice, leaders can project an image of authenticity that resonates with others. This alignment between verbal and nonverbal communication can go a long way in building trust and credibility with team members and stakeholders. Ultimately, the ability to convey authenticity through nonverbal cues is a powerful tool that can help leaders inspire confidence and loyalty in those they lead.
