Leaders need to be aware that different cultures communicate through body language in various ways. For instance, while Americans are accustomed to maintaining eye contact as a sign of attentiveness and respect, individuals from Asian cultures may view prolonged eye contact as disrespectful or confrontational. In the same vein, gestures that are considered innocuous in one culture may carry negative connotations in another. Take, for example, the "OK" sign made by forming a circle with the thumb and index finger. While this gesture signifies approval in the United States, it is offensive in countries like Brazil and Turkey. Another aspect of body language that varies across cultures is the use of personal space.
