The individual should strive for inner harmony from "summary" of The Republic of Plato by Plato

In the ideal city-state, justice is not only manifested in the external behavior of individuals, but also in the internal state of each person's soul. Each individual should strive for inner harmony, ensuring that reason, spirit, and desire are properly balanced within themselves. When these elements are in harmony, the individual is able to act justly and fulfill their proper role within society. Reason, as the guiding principle of the soul, should be in control of both spirit and desire. It is the rational part of the soul that should make decisions and direct the actions of the individual. When reason is in control, the individual is able to make wise choices and act in accordance with the greater good. Spirit, on the other hand, serves as the source of courage and determination, supporting reason in its quest for justice. Desire, while important for driving individuals to seek what is needed for survival, must be kept in check by reason and spirit to prevent it from leading to injustice. In striving for inner harmony, individuals must cultivate the virtues that are necessary for a just soul. Wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice are all essential components of a well-ordered soul. Wisdom allows individuals to discern what is truly good and just, while courage gives them the strength to act in accordance with their convictions. Moderation ensures that desires are kept in check and that reason remains in control. Justice, the ultimate virtue, is the result of the proper balance of reason, spirit, and desire, leading individuals to act in a way that benefits both themselves and society as a whole.

Each person has a specific role to play within society, and it is only through the proper functioning of individuals that the city-state as a whole can achieve justice. By cultivating inner harmony and practicing the virtues of wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice, individuals can fulfill their roles and contribute to the greater good of the community.
