Tony fakes his symptoms to get locked up from "summary" of The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson

Tony fakes his symptoms to get locked up. It starts when he's seventeen. He feels lonely and depressed, so he goes to the doctor. The doctor gives him a form to fill out about his feelings. Tony writes that he hears voices, that he believes he has a special connection to God. He's taken to a mental hospital and is relieved to be there. It's a community, a place where he feels safe. He doesn't want to leave. So he starts pretending to have symptoms he doesn't really have. He tells the doctors he's suicidal, that he hears voices telling him to hurt people. They believe him, and he's kept in the hospital. Tony's behavior escalates. He starts self-harming, banging his head against the wall. The doctors are concerned. They increase his medication, but Tony keeps faking his symptoms. He's transferred to a more secure hospital, where he continues his act. He tells the doctors he wants to kill himself. He's put on suicide watch. Tony likes the attention. He feels important. He's someone in the hospital, not just a nobody on the outside. The doctors eventually catch on. They realize Tony has been lying about his symptoms. They confront him, but he denies it. He insists he's really sick, that he needs to stay in the hospital. But the doctors know better. They discharge him, and Tony is back on the outside. He feels lost. He misses the structure, the attention. He tries to get himself readmitted, but no one will believe him. Tony's plan has backfired. He's left to face the real world, without the safety of the hospital. He's on his own, with no one to take care of him.
