Fear drives individuals to extremes in the face of changing power structures from "summary" of The Power by Naomi Alderman

The fear that comes with changing power structures can push individuals to do things they never thought possible. When people feel threatened, when they sense that their power is slipping away, they react in ways that may seem extreme to outsiders. This fear can drive them to take drastic measures, to fight back with all they have, to hold on to power at any cost. In 'The Power', we see how characters respond to the shifting dynamics of power in society, how they grapple with their own fears and desires in the face of uncertainty. As power shifts from one group to another, from one gender to another, from one part of the world to another, individuals are forced to confront their own insecurities and vulnerabilities. They are forced to question their place in the world, their identity, their sense of self. This fear of losing control, of losing influence, can lead them to act in ways that are cruel, violent, even inhumane. It can push them to betray their own values, to betray those they love, in order to maintain their position of power. The fear of being marginalized, of being left behind, can drive people to desperate measures. It can make them willing to do things they never thought themselves capable of, to commit acts of violence, to oppress others, to assert their dominance in ways that are destructive and harmful. This fear can blind them to the consequences of their actions, can make them lose sight of their own humanity. In 'The Power', we see how fear can corrupt individuals, how it can turn them into monsters, how it can make them forget who they are. Power is a dangerous thing, a seductive thing, and when individuals feel that power slipping away, they will do whatever it takes to hold on to it. They will go to extremes, they will make choices that they never thought themselves capable of, all in the name of self-preservation. Fear can be a powerful motivator, a driving force that pushes individuals to the brink, that pushes them to do things that they never thought possible.
