Social engineering can lead to oppression from "summary" of The Open Society and Its Enemies by Karl Raimund Popper

Social engineering, the attempt to shape society according to a blueprint, is a dangerous endeavor as it can easily lead to oppression. When individuals or groups believe they possess the knowledge and wisdom to engineer society, they inevitably seek to impose their vision on others. This imposition of a particular way of life on a diverse population inherently restricts individual freedom and autonomy. The belief in the ability to engineer society is often rooted in a desire for control and power. Those who engage in social engineering see themselves as the architects of a better world, and they are willing to use whatever means necessary to achieve their goals. This can result in the suppression of dissent and the stifling of alternative viewpoints, as those in power seek to maintain their hold on society. Furthermore, the very act of social engineering assumes a level of knowledge and foresight that is simply unattainable. Society is a complex and dynamic system, influenced by countless variables that are impossible to fully understand or predict. Attempting to control or manipulate this system is a hubristic endeavor that is doomed to fail. In addition, the imposition of a particular vision of society on a diverse population can lead to the marginalization and disenfranchisement of certain groups. Those who do not fit into the prescribed mold are often treated as second-class citizens, denied equal rights and opportunities. This creates a hierarchy within society, with those in power dictating the terms of existence for everyone else.
  1. The belief in the power of social engineering to create a perfect society is a dangerous delusion. It overlooks the inherent complexity and diversity of human society, and it leads to the erosion of individual freedom and autonomy. Instead of seeking to engineer society, we should focus on fostering a culture of open dialogue and mutual respect, where diverse voices can be heard and valued. Only then can we truly create a society that is just and inclusive for all.
