The idea that social change is limited when it is pushed forward by wealthy individuals and corporations is a provocative one. It challenges the prevailing narrative that the wealthy and powerful are the ones who will save us all. In reality, those who benefit the most from the status quo are unlikely to be the ones who will upend it. They may support causes that make them feel good about themselves or help burnish their public image, but true systemic change that threatens their own power and privilege is a different matter altogether. When the wealthy and powerful are the ones driving social change, they tend to focus on solutions that do not fundamentally challenge the existing power structures.
