Insulin resistance is a key player in the development of obesity. When we eat, our body releases insulin to help move glucose from the bloodstream into our cells for energy. However, when we consume too much sugar and refined carbohydrates, our insulin levels become chronically elevated. This constant bombardment of insulin causes our cells to become resistant to its effects. As a result, the body needs to produce even more insulin to get the same glucose-lowering response.
