Choose colors that work well together from "summary" of The Non-designer's Design Book by Robin Williams

When it comes to selecting colors for your design, it’s important to choose hues that complement each other. This doesn’t mean you have to stick to a strict color palette, but rather that the colors you choose should work well together. One way to ensure your colors harmonize is to use colors that are analogous, or adjacent to each other on the color wheel. This creates a sense of unity and cohesion in your design. On the other hand, using colors that are complementary, or opposite each other on the color wheel, can create a bold and eye-catching contrast. When choosing colors, consider their temperature as well. Warm colors like reds, oranges, and yellows can create a sense of energy and excitement, while cool colors like blues, greens, and purples can evoke calm and tranquility. Mixing warm and cool colors can create a dynamic balance in your design. Another factor to consider is the value of the colors you choose. Value refers to how light or dark a color is. By incorporating a range of values in your design, you can create depth and dimension.
  1. The key to choosing colors that work well together is to trust your instincts. If a combination of colors feels right to you, chances are it will resonate with your audience as well. Experiment with different color combinations and trust your eye for what looks harmonious.
