Balance of power is essential for stability from "summary" of The New Science of Politics by Eric Voegelin
The fundamental problem of politics is the reality of power. Power, by its very nature, is prone to abuse and corruption. History has shown time and again that when power is concentrated in the hands of a few, it leads to oppression, tyranny, and instability. The only way to prevent such abuse of power is to ensure that power is balanced among different centers of authority. The concept of balance of power is essential for stability because it prevents any one individual or group from gaining unchecked control over the political system. By distributing power among various institutions, such as the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, as well as between levels of government, such as federal, state, and local, the risk of tyranny is minimized. When power is divided and shared among different entities, each has a check on the others, creating a system of mutual accountability. This system of checks and balances ensures that no single entity can dominate the political landscape. It forces those in power to negotiate, compromise, and cooperate with others to achieve their goals. Furthermore, the balance of power fosters a healthy competition among different centers of authority. This competition spurs innovation, prevents stagnation, and encourages adaptability in the face of changing circumstances. It also provides a safeguard against corruption, as the fear of losing power acts as a deterrent to unethical behavior.- The balance of power is not only essential for stability but also for the preservation of liberty and democracy. It is a bulwark against tyranny, ensuring that the rights and freedoms of individuals are protected. Without a balance of power, the political system is susceptible to abuse, corruption, and ultimately, collapse. Therefore, it is imperative that we uphold this principle in order to maintain a stable and just society.
