We have a tendency to adapt to both positive and negative experiences from "summary" of The Myths of Happiness by Sonja Lyubomirsky

As humans, we possess a remarkable ability to adapt to the various experiences that life throws our way. Whether positive or negative, we have a tendency to adjust to these circumstances over time. This phenomenon is known as hedonic adaptation, and it plays a significant role in shaping our overall well-being and happiness. When we experience something positive, such as winning the lottery or getting a promotion at work, we may initially feel a surge of happiness and excitement. However, as time goes on, the intensity of these positive emotions tends to wane. We become accustomed to our new circumstances, and what once brought us joy eventually becomes the new normal. Conversely, when we encounter negative experiences, such as the loss of a loved one or a significant setback, we may feel intense sadness or despair. Yet, over time, we gradually adjust to these negative emotions as well. While the pain may never fully disappear, we learn to cope with our loss and find ways to move forward. This ability to adapt to both positive and negative experiences is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it allows us to bounce back from adversity and find resilience in the face of challenges. On the other hand, it can also lead to a sense of complacency and a lack of appreciation for the good things in life. It is important to recognize the role of hedonic adaptation in our lives and to actively work against its negative effects. By practicing gratitude, savoring positive experiences, and cultivating a growth mindset, we can counteract the tendency to take our blessings for granted and find greater satisfaction in the present moment. Hedonic adaptation may be a natural part of the human experience, but it does not have to dictate our happiness.
