Supernovae give us insight into the life cycle of stars from "summary" of The Mysteries of the Universe by Will Gater

When a massive star exhausts its nuclear fuel, it can no longer support its own weight against gravity. The core collapses rapidly, causing an explosion known as a supernova. This cataclysmic event releases an incredible amount of energy, briefly outshining an entire galaxy as the star blows itself apart. The debris from a supernova contains many different elements, which are scattered into space during the explosion. These elements include heavy metals like gold, silver, and iron, as well as lighter elements like oxygen and carbon. The presence of these elements in the universe tells us that they were created inside stars and then released during supernova explosions. Studying supernovae can help us understand the life cycle of stars. By observing the different stages of a supernova explosion, astronomers can learn about the processes that occur inside massive stars as they age and eventually die. For example, they can study how nuclear fusion in a star's core creates energy and builds up elements over time. Supernovae also play a crucial role in seeding the universe with heavier elements. When a massive star explodes, it disperses these elements into space, where they can eventually form new stars, planets, and even life. Without supernovae, the universe would be a much poorer place, lacking the diverse array of elements that are essential for the existence of complex structures like galaxies and living organisms.
