Lack of accountability breeds misconduct from "summary" of The Money Culture by Michael Lewis

The idea that no one is responsible for anything is a dangerous one. It creates an environment where anything goes, where individuals can act with impunity, knowing that there will be no consequences for their actions. When no one is held accountable, misconduct becomes the norm, rather than the exception. People begin to push the boundaries, to see what they can get away with, knowing that there will be no repercussions. This lack of accountability is particularly prevalent in industries where there is a lot of money at stake. In the world of finance, for example, where billions of dollars can change hands in the blink of an eye, the temptation to cut corners, to bend the rules, can be overwhelming. And when there is no one there to say "stop," to hold individuals to account for their actions, then misconduct is almost inevitable. But the consequences of this lack of accountability go far beyond just the financial world. When people see that they can get away with unethical behavior, it erodes the very fabric of society. Trust breaks down, cooperation becomes impossible, and chaos reigns. In the end, we are all worse off for it. So, we must all take responsibility for our actions. We must hold ourselves and others accountable, even when it is difficult, even when it is inconvenient. Because the alternative is far worse. The alternative is a world where anything goes, where misconduct is the norm, and where no one is safe. And that is a world none of us want to live in.
