Through mindfulness practice, individuals can cultivate selfcompassion from "summary" of The Mindful Way through Depression by J. Mark G. Williams,John D. Teasdale,Zindel V. Segal,Jon Kabat-Zinn

When we practice mindfulness, we are learning to pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judgment. This non-judgmental awareness allows us to see our experiences for what they are, without getting caught up in them or trying to push them away. Through this practice, we can learn to treat ourselves with kindness and compassion, even in the face of difficult emotions or challenging situations. Self-compassion is the act of being understanding and caring towards ourselves in times of struggle or suffering. It involves treating ourselves with the same kindness that we would offer to a good friend who is going through a hard time. When we practice mindfulness, we are better able to cultivate this self-compassion because we are more aware of our thoughts and feelings, and can see them with a sense of perspective and understanding. In the midst of depression, it can be easy to fall into a pattern of self-criticism and self-blame. We may berate ourselves for feeling a certain way or for not being able to cope with our emotions. However, through mindfulness practice, we can begin to see these self-critical thoughts for what they are - just thoughts, rather than truths. This allows us to step back from our self-judgment and instead offer ourselves the compassion and understanding that we truly need. By cultivating self-compassion through mindfulness practice, we are able to break free from the cycle of negative self-talk and self-blame that often accompanies depression. Instead of getting caught up in a spiral of self-criticism, we can learn to treat ourselves with kindness and care, no matter what we may be going through. This shift in perspective can be incredibly healing and can help us to navigate the challenges of depression with greater ease and resilience.
