Let go of attachment to material possessions from "summary" of The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus by Marcus Aurelius (Emperor of Rome)

It is essential to understand that material possessions are fleeting and impermanent. They do not define who we are as individuals, nor do they hold any intrinsic value beyond their utility. When we become attached to material things, we may mistakenly believe that our happiness and well-being depend on them. This attachment can lead to suffering, as we may fear losing what we possess or feel a sense of lack if we do not acquire more. By letting go of our attachment to material possessions, we free ourselves from the burden of constantly seeking to acquire or hold on to things. We can cultivate a sense of inner peace and contentment that is not reliant on external circumstances. This does not mean that we should renounce all material goods, but rather that we should not allow them to dictate our sense of self-worth or happiness. When we release our attachment to material possessions, we can focus on what truly matters in life – our relationships, our values, and our inner growth. We can appreciate the beauty of the present moment without being preoccupied with accumulating more wealth or possessions. This shift in mindset allows us to live more authentically and in alignment with our true selves. It is important to remember that everything in this physical world is subject to change and decay. Material possessions come and go, but our inner qualities and virtues are lasting. By investing in our character and cultivating qualities such as kindness, compassion, and wisdom, we can create a legacy that transcends material wealth.
  1. By letting go of our attachment to material possessions, we can experience a deeper sense of freedom and fulfillment. We can live more lightly on this earth, unencumbered by the weight of materialism. In doing so, we can embrace a more meaningful and purposeful existence, grounded in the values that truly enrich our lives.
