Sol discovers a way to communicate with Earth from "summary" of The Martian by Andy Weir
Sol was working on the Pathfinder probe, which was originally meant to communicate with the Ares 4 crew. He realized that he could repurpose it to send a signal to NASA using the camera. He managed to send a series of hexadecimal codes that spelled out a message, "ARES 3 MISSION WILL SUCCEED." This was the first time he was able to communicate with Earth since the crew left Mars. Sol knew that NASA would notice the message and hopefully come up with a plan to rescue him. He felt a surge of hope at the thought of being able to contact Earth after so long.
