Birth of the Kuru princes from "summary" of The Mahabharata by Dwaipayana Vyasa

In the city of Hastinapura, King Santanu of the Bharata dynasty was married to the goddess Ganga, who had assumed human form. They had a son named Devavrata, who later came to be known as Bhishma, the grand old patriarch of the Kuru dynasty. After the passing of King Santanu, Bhishma swore an oath of celibacy to ensure the throne of Hastinapura remained with the lineage of his father. He renounced all claims to the throne and dedicated his life to serving his family and kingdom. As time passed, Bhishma's father King Santanu married Satyavati, a fisherwoman.
