Persistence in seeking understanding from "summary" of The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan
We have been arguing for hours. We have been arguing for days. I am not sure what we are even arguing about anymore. I just know that we are not seeing eye to eye and that every word I say seems to be the wrong one. I wish I could say the right thing. I wish I could make you understand. I wish you could make me understand. But maybe understanding isn't about saying the right words. Maybe it's about listening. Maybe it's about asking questions. Maybe it's about hearing what the other person is really saying, instead of just waiting for your turn to speak. Maybe it's about being patient. Maybe it's about being persistent. Maybe it's about not giving up, even when things seem impossible. Even when it feels like you are speaking different languages. Even when it feels like you are on opposite sides of the world. Maybe that is when understanding matters the most. Maybe that is when it is worth fighting for. So I will keep asking questions. I will keep listening. I will keep trying to see things from your point of view. I will keep trying to make you see things from mine. I will keep fighting for understanding, even when it feels like all hope is lost. Because maybe that is what love is. Maybe that is what it means to really know someone.
