Leaders are made, not born from "summary" of The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes,Barry Z. Posner

Many people believe that leaders are born with a certain set of traits that make them destined for greatness. However, the truth is that leadership is a skill that can be developed and nurtured over time. In our research, we have found that successful leaders are not necessarily born with innate abilities, but rather they have cultivated their skills through practice, experience, and a commitment to growth. The concept that leaders are made, not born, challenges the traditional notion that leadership is a fixed characteristic that some people possess and others do not. Instead, it suggests that anyone can become an effective leader with the right mindset and dedication. This perspective is empowering because it means that leadership is accessible to all individuals, regardless of their background or initial capabilities. By focusing on the idea that leaders are made, not born, we shift the emphasis from innate qualities to learnable behaviors. This approach encourages aspiring leaders to take ownership of their development and actively seek out opportunities to grow and improve. It also highlights the importance of continuous learning and self-reflection in the journey to becoming a better leader. In our book, 'The Leadership Challenge', we outline five practices that effective leaders engage in to inspire and empower those around them. These practices, which include modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart, are not inherent traits but rather learned behaviors that can be honed through deliberate practice and feedback.
  1. Not born, individuals can adopt a growth mindset that allows them to see challenges as opportunities for growth and development. This mindset encourages leaders to seek out feedback, learn from their mistakes, and continuously strive to improve their skills. Ultimately, by focusing on the belief that leaders are made, not born, individuals can unlock their full potential and become the leaders they aspire to be.
