Community and fellowship play a vital role in spiritual growth from "summary" of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything by James Martin
The idea that community and fellowship are important for spiritual growth is a central theme that runs throughout the Jesuit tradition. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, understood the importance of relationships in the spiritual life. He believed that we are all connected to one another and that our relationships with others can help us to grow closer to God. Ignatius also believed that we are called to love and serve one another in community. This idea of "being with" others in community is central to Ignatian spirituality. When we are in community with others, we are able to support one another on our spiritual journeys, offering guidance, encouragement, and companionship along the way. In the Jesuit tradition, spiritual growth is not just an individual pursuit. It is something that happens in relationship with others. By sharing our experiences, insights, and struggles with one another, we are able to learn and grow in our faith. Community provides a space where we can be vulnerable and authentic, where we can challenge and be challenged, where we can encounter God in the faces of our brothers and sisters. Fellowship is also important for spiritual growth because it helps us to see beyond ourselves and our own needs. When we are in community with others, we are reminded that we are part of something larger than ourselves, that we are connected to a greater whole. This sense of connection can be a source of comfort, strength, and inspiration on our spiritual journeys.- Community and fellowship are essential for spiritual growth because they help us to live out the two greatest commandments: to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. When we are in community with others, we are able to deepen our relationships with both God and our neighbors, growing in love and compassion along the way. In this way, community and fellowship are not just important for our spiritual growth; they are essential.
