Inattentional blindness is the phenomenon that causes us to miss visible objects when our attention is focused elsewhere. When our attention is engaged in one task, we may fail to notice unexpected objects or events that are right in front of us. This can happen even when the objects are highly visible and would normally be easily noticed. One famous example of inattentional blindness is the gorilla experiment conducted by psychologists Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons. In this experiment, participants were asked to watch a video of people passing basketballs and count how many times the ball was passed.
